London Demography

The demography of London is analysed by the Office for National Statistics and data is produced for each of the Greater London wards, the City of London and the 32 London boroughs, the Inner London and Outer London statistical sub-regions, each of the Parliamentary constituencies in London, and for all of Greater London as a whole.

London's population is composed of a wide range of ethnicities, cultures, and religions, and in the city speak over 300 languages. In 2007 the official population was 7,512,400 in Greater London area. The Greater London Urban Area, the second largest in the EU, has a population of 8,278,251 and the metropolitan area has an estimated population of 12 to 14 million people. The public transport network, administered by Transport for London, is one of the largest in the world, and Heathrow Airport is the busiest international airport by passenger volume in Europe.

With industrialization started, the population of London grew rapidly throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century, and in fact became the most populous city in the world until it was surpassed by New York in 1925. Its maximum rate of population in 1939 reached 8,615,245 persons registered. In 1939, London was a small town that included what is now called City of London or, more simply, the city. However, today is one of the largest urban agglomerations or megacities in the world, having been extended to several kilometers, covering a multitude of old villages and surrounding villages. With a total area of 1579 square kilometers and 33 districts (including the City), the current London or Greater London, has 7,512,400 inhabitants (2006), making it one of Europe's most populated cities, with Moscow, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Berlin. The London urban area is 9,332,000 inhabitants, the second of the European Union after Paris, and is estimated to live in the metropolitan area of 12 to 14 million people.

The London metropolitan area has a population of 14,945,000 inhabitants, higher than the population of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland together. It is the second largest metropolitan area in Europe, second only to Moscow, and one of the 20 largest in the world with a life and economic flow that place in the world shared second place with the city of Paris (France) only on behind the city of New York (United States).
